4 Tips for Keeping Your Skin Beautiful In Winter
It’s March and Spring is coming...but it’s still cold enough for the weather to wreak havoc on your skin. Cold weather strips your skin of its natural surface oils that act as a protective barrier between your skin and environmental toxins like bacteria and free radicals, leaving your skin unprotected. In turn, your skin tries to compensate by producing more oil. What you’re left with is a perfect storm of acne - no protective layer to keep pimple-causing bacteria out and your skin constantly producing oil to compensate, leading to oilier, breakout-prone skin.
And it’s not just acne that you have worry about in the winter months. The cold and dry air is bad news for skin even if you don’t suffer from acne - it dries it out, causes redness and swelling, and exacerbates other skin conditions like rosacea. You may also be less likely to apply sunscreen in colder weather since you don’t notice the heat as much; however, that’s a mistake. You are exposed to just as much UV radiation from the sun even in cold or cloudy weather. Of course, sunlight exposure can cause a host of skin problems such as uneven skin tone and sunspots, in addition to the more serious long-term consequences, like skin cancer.
Acne, dryness, redness, uneven skin tone, sun spots...the winter definitely doesn’t sound like a good time for your skin. And it’s not! Don’t despair, though - there are things you can do to protect your skin during the cold months and keep your acne, rosacea, or other skin condition from being made worse.
Here are some tips for keeping your skin healthy in the winter:
1. Use sunscreen!
This tip should be obvious, but it’s one of the most overlooked. UV radiation not only causes sun spots and uneven skin tone, it also exacerbates conditions like rosacea. Sunlight has actually been shown to have beneficial effects on acne, but it’s still important to protect your skin with sunscreen, even if you have acne.
2. Go natural! (always, in on our opinion)
You should always avoid harsh synthetic ingredients that can cause damage and major irritation to your skin. This is especially so in the winter, when your skin is already being damaged by the weather. This becomes all the more important if you have sensitive skin, acne, rosacea, or any other skin condition that will be aggravated by the weather. Natural ingredients are gentler and will help nourish healthy skin without drying it out or causing additional irritation.
3. Moisturize!
It goes without saying that if the rough winter conditions are stripping away your skin’s natural oils, then the solution is to help replenish the moisture your skin is losing. Some of the best moisturizing ingredients are oils, like aloe vera and coconut oil, because they not only hydrate the skin, but also repair damage and nourish the skin with antioxidants and vitamins.
If you have acne, you may be hesitant about applying more oil to your skin. However, moisturizing your skin with natural oils actually signals your body to produce less of its own natural oil, so your skin won’t get extra oily.
